The ringing of the phone roused Kasey from her restful sleep at nine p.m., and as she slowly sat up she was dismayed to discover that her apartment was nearly pitch-black and rather spooky. She leaned over and fumbled for the switch on the lamp at the end of the sofa, then picked the phone up after five rings and sleepily said, “Hello?”

“Kasey? Are you alright, sweetheart?”

Kasey smiled at the sound of Ashwin’s voice and replied, “I’m alright. How’s your shift going?”

Ashwin sighed and said, “The usual. It’s been hectic, but right now I’m on my break, so I thought I’d give you a call and see if you were feeling any better.”

Kasey nodded and replied, “I am, actually. Thank you.”

“Did you get some rest?”

Kasey smiled. “Yes, I did.”

“I’m glad, sweetheart. And there’s no need to thank me.”

Kasey frowned. “Well, of course there is.”

“How do you figure that?”

“Well, because you—“

“Because I what?”

Kasey shrugged. “You made me feel better.”

Ashwin laughed and replied, “Well, I AM a doctor, sweetheart, that’s what we do.”

“And you do it very well.”

“There’s something else I also do extremely well,” Ashwin said as he leaned back in his chair and propped his feet on his desk. Kasey smiled and responded, “There is, huh? And what would that be?”

Ashwin laughed softly and murmured, “You’ll find out soon.”

“I will, huh?”

“Yes.”

“Says who?” Kasey inquired as she began twirling a strand of hair around her finger. Ashwin laughed again, a deep, husky laugh that made butterflies do somersaults in Kasey’s belly before he murmured, “I say.”

“Oh. OK.”

Ashwin sighed and said, “I have to go, sweetheart, I’m being paged. I will stop by the desk in the morning and see you before I head upstairs to bed. Will that be OK?”

Kasey shrugged and replied, “I see no reason why it wouldn’t be.”

“OK, then. I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”

“Oh…wait. I don’t have to be at work until ten.”

“OK. I'll see you tomorrow afternoon when your shift is over, then.”

“OK.”

“I have to go, sweetheart. Sleep well.” He quickly hung up the phone, and as Kasey sat there staring at the phone in her hand, she wondered just when he planned on showing her what else he could do extremely well. She sighed and slowly got to her feet, then treated herself to a long, hot, relaxing shower before she called it a night and snuggled deep beneath her warm, soft comforter. Moments later she was fast asleep.
